During Your Stay

During your stay

Transport and parking

Most day patients will spend approximately four hours post operatively with us (if local anaesthetic is used it may be less). Please ensure that a responsible adult is available to collect you.

Disabled access

The hospital entrances and exits have been designed to enable easy access for wheelchairs. If you require the use of a wheelchair during your stay, either for yourself or visitors, please let the receptionist know either beforehand or on arrival.

Admission

Please arrive at the time specified and go to the area as stated in our correspondence with you. You will be asked to wait in a ‘Pre surgery lounge’ where you will meet other patients having a procedure in our day unit. Alternatively for those hospitals without a specific day unit you will be shown to your room.

A nurse will welcome you and do some pre treatment checks (such as blood pressure and pulse). You will also be asked some questions to ensure that we have all the information needed to ensure your safety and that all your needs are taken into account.

You may also be seen by your Surgeon and/or Anaesthetist - in a private room. Please take the opportunity to ask any of the team any questions you may have. Once all the checks have been completed you will be asked to return to the ‘Pre surgery area’. You will only be asked to change out of your clothes and into a ‘theatre gown’ if necessary. If this is required, you will be provided with a secure locker in which to place your belongings. When everything is ready, you will be escorted to the area where your treatment will take place, and met by your doctor and his team. It will depend on the type of anaesthetic you are receiving, as to where your treatment will take place. For example, if having a general anaesthetic or sedation, this may be an operating theatre. If having a local anaesthetic this may be a treatment room.

Your procedure

Please ensure that you make all necessary preparations for your procedure, including removing nail varnish, nail extensions and cosmetics.

Plain wedding bands may be worn but will be covered with tape prior to surgery. It is requested that any other jewellery including body piercings are removed and kept safely at home or given to a relative for safe-keeping. Surgery is rarely cancelled, but please be aware that operations can occasionally be postponed for reasons of clinical safety.

Post operation

Where you go immediately after your procedure, will depend on the type of anaesthetic you have received. For example if you have a general anaesthetic or sedation, you will need constant monitoring for a while. You may also feel drowsy, so may need to lie down for a short time until you have recovered from the effects. If you have had a local anaesthetic only, you won’t need as much monitoring, so will be shown to a ‘Discharge area’ where you will be able to sit for a while until you are seen by a nurse and advised you can go home. Again, dependant on your treatment, your doctor or a physiotherapist may wish to see you before you leave the hospital. We will let you know if this is the case.

If at any time you feel uncomfortable, in pain or feel sick, then please let the nurse know. We will be able to help you and need to ensure that you are feeling comfortable and well enough to go home.

Meals

We provide light refreshments for all our Premium Care day patients, depending upon your procedure. Special diets can be catered for including vegetarian and those patients with any special cultural or religious requirements.
